What is a fractal?




So what is a fractal? A fractal is a pattern that is self similar on different scales. Shapes in nature often have a fractal like nature such as snowflakes, trees, seashells, the leaf of a fern plant. 


Fractals can be very basic and simple, the most basic example being a circle, no matter how much you zoom in on the curve of a circle, it will still remain a curve. 


Fractals are not always so simple however, in fact most of the time they can reach complexities way beyond our comprehension.


One of the most famous visual fractals is the Mandelbrot fractal. It is generated by iterating a simple mathematical formula and examining the behavior of points on the complex plane. It can only be comprehended when made visual. 







Fractal patterns in nature



Benoit Mandelbrot who came up with the mandelbrot fractal proposed that our universe is a fractal. What does this mean? This would make life a geometry set in motion by chaos.


That would make life the flow of a complex equation working itself out and our lives patterns set in time.

Fractals show up on our planet on different scales physically. 


There are small fractal patterns like feathers, fern leaves, curled shells, trees and many more in nature. This fern for example as a whole is the same pattern as each leaf and the components of that leaf is also the same pattern as the whole.



This can be scaled way beyond these small physical fractal patterns in nature and into more complex, larger fractals.


Our coastlines have fractal curve-like properties which is something known as the coastline paradox, river systems also have a fractal nature along with rain forests.


Terrence Mckenna did a talk about fractals and had heard of the coastline paradox. He decided to test it out in theory. 


He explained how he walked along a coastline and found a black pebble. He kept walking and he found what looked like the exact same pebble.


He then decided to trace back and count his steps between the two and found that it sat at 725 steps. He took another 725 steps in the other direction and found a 3rd pebble just like the other two.




He said:


“What is implied if we say that there is a fractal description of rain-forests, there's a fractal description of river systems, there is a fractal description of the coastlines of the continents? What that implies is that there must be a fractal in which those fractals are somehow subsets and that the planet itself is some kind of fractal object”


If this is not enough to convince you, fractal physicalities go beyond our planet, They expand as far out as our cosmos.


The fractal nature of the Cosmos



When we look into the cosmos with our high powered telescopes we see a universe that is far from uniform. It is a vast cosmic web of galaxies, each interconnecting in a complex pattern that spans the entire observable universe. These patterns reveal remarkable similarity to fractal structures. They follow a pattern that repeats at different scales. 


Not only this but the fractal nature of the cosmos can also be seen in the cosmic microwave background radiation. The afterglow of the big bang. The radiation shows slight variations in temperature. This radiation temperature appears to follow a fractal pattern. 


An endless dance of creation and destruction of galaxies being born and dying all following a fractal pattern.


Interestingly these fractal-like patterns go beyond physicality even, the very nature of life is fractal like. This is the part where things get more interesting. 



Fractal nature of life and the mind


If the universe were truly a fractal wouldn't that mean that how we experience life has a fractal like nature? Every day has a pattern that repeats, every week, every month, every year. Every million years. 


We can see these patterns with human psychology, behavioral patterns of consumer statistics, even seemingly random collective events that play out. The patterns are never completely set to be exact. There is always a slight variation. 


Day to day we generally think 95% of the same thoughts that we did the day before.


We also have collective patterns that we share on weekdays. Most of us party on Saturdays and crash on Mondays. Every month there are collective highs and lows beyond weekdays and beyond months there are collective highs and lows during different points of the seasons in the year. Even seasonally how we act generally as a society changes. The depressions are higher in the winter and people tend to have more fun in the summer. 


The nature of speech has a fractal like nature structure due to its self similarity at different scales. Just like fractals exhibit patterns that repeat themselves at varying levels of magnification, speech also contains recurring elements such as phonemes, words and phrases.

A lot of the deepest philosophical teachings seem to come through either metaphor or can be applied in many different ways on different scales.


Does this not imply that if there are fundamental truths that show up on different scales throughout the course of our lives and that even the construct of our own intellect and understanding has a fractal like nature?


well our brain is wired with neurons that all connect in a branching fractal pattern, interesting no?





The geometry of consciousness


Have you noticed that in the animal kingdom what we call “higher conscious” creatures are those that can comprehend more complex systems of thinking?


The lower conscious life forms seem to display the most simple geometry in their lives but more conscious creatures abstract more from the order. As if the universe was a fractal that can only be comprehended in parts to degrees of consciousness among life forms.





Like plants for example, plants have the simplest lives, they live seed and die, bugs abstract more from plants as they can move around sporadically.




and then we get to more intelligent creatures such as mammals which then start to show more complicated behaviors and show emotional intelligence and play.


Then finally human beings, the most chaotic of them all (Although no one life form would be able to comprehend another more conscious than its own understanding so we would not know higher conscious life if it were put right in front of us)


Of course there are lesser and more intelligent creatures in the ecosystem in different ways yet regardless of what different abilities or senses they have that may or may not go beyond our abilities, general comprehension is determined by the ability to process more complex systems. 


So if the comprehension of more complicated systems and truths that follow a more intuitive geometry is determined by levels of consciousness, would that not mean that surly cultures that have been meditating to expand their awareness for centuries must at least be tapped into some of this truth, there must be links between the understanding of each introspective culture.

Esoteric links


When people experience altered states of consciousness through especially deep meditation sessions, it is not uncommon for them to experience shapes known as “sacred geometry”. 

As it turns out a lot of these shapes and most commonly the “flower of life” shape have been found in all kinds of ancient places of worship all across the world.



In history religion would be where people introspect the most consciously. A lot of these religions believed that the deeper you look within yourself the more connected with God or rather “A divine order”.


It also brings a new light to old arts such as astrology which is essentially ancient mathematics and the cycles and patterns in the cosmos which are believed to have some influence on life on earth as a form of divination and Numerology which is the belief in an occult, divine or mystical relationship between a number and synchronicity


When we get into the phenomena of vibration and the beliefs surrounding that things get even more strange and uncanny to the idea that we live in a fractal universe.

Pretty much everything is vibration. Vibration and geometry go hand in hand.


Colour, sound and even matter consists of vibrating molecules.

 All vibration can be broken down into rhythm and pattern when it is slowed down.


What a lot of ancient places of worship and spiritual traditions also all have in common Is knowledge of vibration that seemed to way beyond their time.



 The “Om” sound in Buddhism which when spoken is viewed as a sacred sound viewed through a tonoscope for example looks exactly the same as the “Om” mandala when they would have no sort of technology to visualize the vibration of the sound through geometry back then.


Tibetan Buddhists also projected mandalas on the walls which they say they used to record sound. They had no way of recording sound in the ancient times yet somehow they knew about the links between geometry and the vibration of sound. 


The list goes on and on from the geometry in churches and cymatic patterns of the resonant frequencies of churches to the vibrational intelligence of ancient Egypt in ritual, the list goes on and on. 


In conclusion


The smaller scale and larger more complex fractals on our planet expanding to larger fractals in the cosmos combined with the fractal nature of life, speech and wisdom already is enough to imply that we live in a fractal universe.


With the implications of consciousness following a geometry that gets more complex and chaotic the higher the level of consciousness is and looking to introspective cultures and religions that worked to expand their awareness find similar truth of a divine geometry.


its quite uncanny that we live in a fractal universe.

This is so beyond mind altering, I feel like I understand all of it yet none of it at the exact same time, not even sure how that’s possible. The universe is forever full of mysteries.

Really interesting information! Just one thing, there are many grammar mistakes throughout the article. I would recommend editing more throughly to ensure clear communication. Some parts were a bit confusing to comprehend due to lack of punctuation. The content is still great though!
