The significance of 3-4am

Updated: Feb 20

Across various religions and cultures from all over the world 3-4 am has either been a subject of superstition or some sort of divine significance but why is this?

In folklore 3:00-4:00 am is known as witching hour or the devil's hour. This is a time of the night which is most associated with supernatural events. Witching hour can be traced back to ancient times when it was believed that certain hours of the day and night were more auspicious for magic and divination practices. Witching hour in particular was seen as a time when witches and other practitioners of the occult were at their most powerful. In the middle ages people were advised to stay indoors around this time for this reason.

Something which intrigues me in particular about these superstitions is its alignment with the belief of brahma muhurta which is a time that holds great significance in Hinduism. Brahma Muhata translates to “Time of the creator”. The time  varies but the bottom line is that it's around 1h 36 mins before sunrise typically landing it approx between 3:30 to 5am. It is believed that Brahma Muhurta is the time which is best for doing meditation and spiritual work as there is a source of immense energy to get the most benefit.

Sadhguru on Bramah Muhurta :

“If you become in rhythm with life you will wake up somewhere after 3am, at this time you should sit up and do whatever you feel initiated to do, it will bear maximum fruit, the seed will get the support that it needs to sprout around this time”

In Iu8slam there is an optional night prayer that falls between 3-5 am called Tahajjud. It is said that God is more present around these hours and the veils between the realms are at their lowest.

3-4 am has been the subject of much speculation from a psychological standpoint. Some experts believe that it represents a time of transition, when the mind is more open to ideas and experiences. Others see it as a time of heightened creativity and intuition, when the subconscious mind is more active and receptive to inspiration.

The pineal gland (aka the 3rd eye) is most active around 4-5 am secreting melatonin.

With the pineal gland having pre-existing beliefs around multiple cultures and philosophies for its role in intuitive knowing and creativity this becomes something somewhat of a curiosity in its alignment to these ancient beliefs.

I did not know about this! My body has been waking me up around this time for years but especially the last few, which have been tough. I will take this as a sign to meditate on my goals/higher self when I do and see what happens, thank you!

I have been meditating for over 3 years now, and my body will sometimes wake up and meditate between 3-5 am. I do not plan this it just happens.
